The Iron Man FITASC event took place at Rose City Flying Clays in Tyler, TX on August 30, 2009. It was a 100 target event over four old system layouts. Mo Parsons set some great targets with a good mix of trap, quartering, crossing and chandel birds. Standouts were the incomer curling to the shooters right on P3 shot about 30-35 yards out, the B and C high crossing birds on P2 shot probably 45 yards out. The B bird maybe wasn’t a crosser totally but nearly a teal. From peg 1 you needed lead like a true crosser though. From pegs 2 and 3 it was showing black belly so there was no use in looking for it in the tree line. The smart shooter held the barrels high and killed it in the sky. Lastly the crow like D bird on P1 was also an excellent bird, look for it in the video. The wicked ones were the fast rising E bird on P1 which had a lot of spring. I got on it once then couldn’t find it again…Speed Equals Lead. The P4 E bird was also a bit of a bugger from what I could see. A trap-shot type of bird sailing away high and fast but very edgy, I hit it all but one time and was caught not looking…
I shot the Kemen Super 28 1oz. load of 8′s at 1210fps. These were manufactured at the new RIO plant in Tennessee. Excellent, low recoiling speedy load with good breaks, however I did have a jamming issue with my Browning Gold Sporting that I know is caused by slow cycling and it cost me a penalty bird on P1. I think the Kemen Extra 28 at 1280fps or the Suprema 28 at 1350fps might be a better choice for my gun. Will have to test those next time and hopefully in my preferred 7.5 shot size. Ronald Mericle (USA) wound up with the FITASC event win with 94ex100, followed by Reggie Quillin (USA) on 93ex100 with Vet. Weaver Branch (USA) in the bronze position with 92ex100. I wound up shooting P4-23, P3-21, P2-21 and P1-13. The C trap on P1 had a battery issue that took a bit to fix and I just lost focus. It cost me the class win right there, oh well you gotta have the mental game too…
